A corset should last a long time, provided it is properly cared for; ensure your corset is not too small for you, do not overtighten it and have it professionally dry cleaned.
Putting a Corset on is easier with someone to help, but perfectly possible to do it on your own. An authentic corset is completely different from a basque or waspie, neither of which is designed to pull in the waist. The real thing comes in two halves, laced together at the back and fastening at the front with a steel busk. Spiral steel boning gives that wonderful hour glass shape and makes our corsets, flexible and comfortable to wear.
